GSM Explained: Choosing the Right Towel Weight for Your Hotel or Spa

GSM stands for grams per square metre, and it's the standard measure of how much fabric a towel actually contains — higher GSM generally means a thicker, more absorbent, longer-lasting towel, though it isn't the only factor that matters.

Lighter-weight towels dry faster and cost less to launder, which suits spas, gyms, and leisure facilities with high turnover and frequent commercial washing. Heavier towels feel more premium and hold up well in guest rooms where presentation matters more than fast turnaround.

GSM isn't the whole story — fibre quality and construction affect how a towel performs over hundreds of commercial washes just as much as its starting weight. A well-made mid-weight towel can outlast a poorly constructed heavy one.

The right choice depends on how the towel will actually be used and laundered in your setting, not a single 'best' number. We talk through expected laundering frequency and guest-facing standard with every enquiry before confirming a specification.
